The Chapter History

We are the Abuja chapter of the National body of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN).

ICSAN is a leading and recognized professional body in Nigeria dedicated to promoting good corporate governance practices, provide qualifications, training and resources to its members and the governance professionals in Nigeria. ICSAN is the premier and only qualifying organization for professionals aspiring to become Chartered Secretaries and Administrators.

Our parent body in the UK, ICSA, was founded in 1891 and was granted Royal Charter in 1902. Today, ICSA has divisions in South Africa, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Zimbabwe and associate branches in many countries of the world. In essence, we have a global brand. We became an affiliate member of Africa Corporate Governance Network (ACGN) in 2016.

We are a knowledge-based institution where knowledge about Corporate Governance and Corporate Secretariat Practice are entrenched.

The Nigerian Chapter was granted autonomy in August, 1988 and incorporated under the Companies Act 1968. It became Chartered by Decree 19 of 1991(Now ACT CAP I13 LFN 2004). However, since 2011, ICSAN became autonomous of the UK and now conducts examinations. In Nigeria, we remain the only professional body that conducts examinations in Corporate Governance and Public Administration. So, we can safely say that we champion good governance practices, provide qualifications, training and resources to members and governance professionals worldwide.
